June 30.11-Chicken McNuggets

This is what Chicken McNuggets look like — Seriously!

This photo has been extensively passed around the web today, and for good reason: it’s a peak into the rarely-seen world of mechanically separated meat, or Advanced Meat Recovery (AMR).

Fooducate writes:

Folks, this is mechanically separated chicken, an invention of the late 20th century. Someone figured out in the 1960′s that meat processors can eek out a few more percent of profit from chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows by scraping the bones 100% clean of meat. This is done by machines, not humans, by passing bones leftover after the initial cutting through a high pressure sieve. The paste you see in the picture above is the result.

This paste goes on to become the main ingredient in many a hot dog, bologna, chicken nuggets, pepperoni, salami, jerky etc…

The industry calls this method AMR – Advanced Meat Recovery.

Once the “chicken” has been processed, it has to be soaked in ammonia (to kill all the bacteria), then flavoring has to be added (because otherwise it tastes like DOO-DOO), and it has to be dyed, because people would freak out if their McNuggets were creamed-strawberry colored (the color of flesh and blood).

And then you feed it to small children.  Scary!

June 29.11-”Celery Therapy” Reduces Blood Pressure

If you have hypertension (high blood pressure), you know it can be tricky to find the right drug or combination of drugs to bring blood pressure back under control. Often the meds do not reduce blood pressure enough… or they become less effective over time, so you have to keep increasing the dose.

Mao Shing Ni, PhD, DOM, LAc, author of Secrets of Longevity: Dr. Mao’s 8-Week Program—Simple Steps that Add Years to Your Life, told me about a simple way to help solve such problems—by drinking celery juice. Used as a complement to hypertension medication, “celery juice therapy” can aid in normalizing blood pressure and even can allow some patients to eventually reduce or discontinue their medication. (Of course, it is important not to alter dosages or discontinue medication without a doctor’s approval.) Celery juice also can be a useful preventive measure for people at risk for hypertension.

Dr. Mao explained that celery contains compounds that relax the smooth muscles lining the arteries and also reduce the stress hormones that constrict the arteries. Both these mechanisms cause the blood vessels to dilate, thus improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure.

Who can be helped: Talk to your doctor about trying celery juice if you have hypertension (blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or higher)… have prehypertension (blood pressure between 120/80 mmHg and 139/89 mmHg)… take medication that may elevate blood pressure (for instance, certain decongestants or antidepressants)… or have a family history of hypertension. If you decide to go ahead, have your doctor take a baseline reading of your blood pressure for later comparison. Celery juice generally is safe for everyone except people with a celery allergy.

What to do: The first goal is to consume the equivalent of 12 to 16 celery stalks per day for one month. You could just chomp on the stalks, but that’s a lot of celery to eat—so it’s more efficient to make juice. Dr. Mao recommended using a juicer because you won’t have to dilute the juice or strain out any fibrous strands. Three to four times per day, drink the juice of four stalks—each serving is about eight ounces.

If you don’t have a juicer, you can use a blender instead. Cut four celery stalks into chunks and place in the blender… add enough water to cover the chunks (about four ounces)… blend well. Strain out the fibers before drinking, because otherwise the fibers would be “too much to bear,” Dr. Mao said. For this diluted juice, the dose is three to four 12-ounce servings daily.

After one month: Visit your doctor and discuss how your original baseline blood pressure reading compares with your current blood pressure as indicated on a home blood pressure monitor or a new reading taken at your doctor’s office. If your blood pressure has dropped, the celery therapy is working!

Continue drinking the juice daily until your blood pressure is under control. At that point, Dr. Mao advised, ask your doctor whether you can try lowering your hypertension medication dosage—do not reduce or discontinue medication on your own. When your blood pressure is completely stable, try gradually reducing your celery juice dosage to one glass daily as a maintenance dose. You may even be able to halt celery juice therapy if your blood pressure completely returns to normal and you are able to go off your blood pressure medication, Dr. Mao said.

June 27.11-WHO: Cell Phone Use Can Increase Possible Cancer Risk

  • NEW: Experts say there are ways to minimize cell phone radiation

  • It’s in the same “hazard” category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform

  • Until now, WHO has said no adverse health effects have been established

  • The cell phone industry maintains that there is no conclusive evidence of danger

(CNN) — Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same “carcinogenic hazard” category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

Before its announcement Tuesday, WHO had assured consumers that no adverse health effects had been established.

A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

What that means is they found some evidence of increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users, but have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers. “The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences,” said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing. It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave oven. “What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain,” Black said. “So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones.”

Wireless industry responded to Tuesday’s announcement saying it “does not mean cell phones cause cancer.” CTIA-The Wireless Association added that WHO researchers “did not conduct any new research, but rather reviewed published studies.”

The European Environmental Agency has pushed for more studies, saying cell phones could be as big a public health risk as smoking, asbestos and leaded gasoline. The head of a prominent cancer-research institute at the University of Pittsburgh sent a memo to all employees urging them to limit cell phone use because of a possible risk of cancer. When you look at cancer development — particularly brain cancer — it takes a long time to develop. I think it is a good idea to give the public some sort of warning that long-term exposure to radiation from your cell phone could possibly cause cancer,” said Dr. Henry Lai, research professor in bioengineering at University of Washington who has studied radiation for more than 30 years.

Results from the largest international study on cell phones and cancer was released in 2010. It showed participants in the study who used a cell phone for 10 years or more had doubled the rate of brain glioma, a type of tumor. To date, there have been no long-term studies on the effects of cell phone usage among children.

“Children’s skulls and scalps are thinner. So the radiation can penetrate deeper into the brain of children and young adults. Their cells are at a dividing faster rate, so the impact of radiation can be much larger.” said Black of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

In February, a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, revealed radiation emitted after just 50 minutes on a mobile phone increases the activity in brain cells. The effects of brain activity being artificially stimulated are still unknown. Neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta says Tuesday’s announcement, “dealt a blow to those who have long said, ‘There is no possible mechanism for cell phones to cause cancer.’ By classifying cell phones as a possible carcinogen, they also seem to be tacitly admitting a mechanism could exist.”

Manufacturers of many popular cell phones already warn consumers to keep their device away from their body and medical experts say there other ways to minimize cell phone radiation. The Apple iPhone 4 safety manual says users’ radiation exposure should not exceed FCC guidelines: “When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 millimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body.” BlackBerry Bold advises users to “keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inch (25 millimeters) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting.”

The logic behind such recommendations is that the further the phone is from the body, the less radiation is absorbed. Users can also use the speakerphone function or a wired earpiece to gain some distance.

Users can text instead of talk if they want to keep the phone away from their faces.

Finally, cell phones emit the most radiation when they are attempting to connect to cellular towers. A moving phone, or a phone in an area with a weak signal, has to work harder, giving of more radiation. So users can avoid using their cell phones in elevators, buildings and rural areas if they want to reduce their exposure, experts say.

June 23.11-Lower Back Problems Effect How

Lower Back Problems Effect the Way You Think

Published in the February 1st 1999 issue of “Spine” research journal, was a study that showed a link between chronic low back pain and slower reaction times, reduced short term memory, and certain motor tasks. The study measured subjects with chronic lower back pain using a computer to test their short term memory and reaction time to certain items that appeared on the screen.

The conclusion was that chronic Lower Back Pain hampers short term memory and decreases the patients speed of process of certain information.

In a related note the “Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics” July August 1999 issue published a pilot study comparing chiropractic care to acupuncture and medication for patients with chronic low back problems. The results were that no change took place with the acupuncture and medication group while significant changes occurred in the chiropractic group. Considering the information above about memory and reaction times we can see the profound positive effect chiropractic can have on these patients.

Study Shows Low Back Surgery No Better Than Rehabilitation

Research published in the May 28, 2005 British Medical Journal suggests that surgery to relieve chronic lower back pain is no better than intensive rehabilitation and nearly twice as expensive. The study did not look at the benefits of chiropractic care, but did compare patients who underwent surgery for lower back pain and those who had rehabilitation led by physiotherapists.

Dr. Jeremy Fairbank, an orthopedic surgeon and lead researcher at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Center in Oxford, England, along with his co-researchers studied 349 chronic back pain sufferers, defined as pain lasting more than 12 months. Of the 349 patients, 176 had spinal fusion surgery while the remainder underwent intensive rehabilitation involving exercises and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Dr. Fairbank stated, “This is strong evidence that intensive rehabilitation is a good thing to do for people with chronic back pain who are thinking about having operations.” The researchers concluded that there was no evidence that surgery was any better than the rehabilitation they compared the surgery to. However, there was a big difference in price with the surgical expense being nearly twice as expensive according to the study.

Helen Campbell of the University of Oxford summed up the results by commenting, “In the short term, compared with intensive rehabilitation, surgical stabilization of the spine as first line treatment for chronic low back pain patients who have already failed standard non-operative care seems not to be cost effective.”

June 22.11-Headache Relief Through Chiropractic

Headache Relief Through Chiropractic

According to the American Chiropractic Association 14% of the public who see chiropractors presently go for headaches. For these patients the good news has gotten even better. Researchers at Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minnesota, compared chiropractic care to certain drug therapies used for tension and migraine headaches.

The study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, followed 218 headache sufferers who were given either chiropractic care or drug therapy or both. Pain was reduced 40- 50% in all groups initially. However, four weeks after all care was stopped, only the chiropractic group still retained the benefits, while those who received the drug therapy lost about half of their improvement.

Headaches Helped by Chiropractic Says Research

In the September 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics was a report on the effectiveness of chiropractic care, specifically labeled “SMT” in the study, for patients with chronic headaches. The data for this report was gathered from nine trials involving 683 patients with chronic headache.

In this study chiropractic adjustments (termed SMT in the study) were compared to massage and medications for short term relief of up to six weeks after a month of care. The question of long term health benefits was not addressed. Results showed that the chiropractic group did better than the massage group. The group that received medication also showed relief however, the rate of side effects for the medication group was considerably higher than the chiropractic group. This difference gave a decidedly large advantage to chiropractic over the medication. According to the report, the financial cost of headaches is great, with billions of dollars spent annually for lost productivity and treatment. The study also noted that people affected with headaches have commonly been treated by medical practitioners. Recently however, they are increasingly turning to non-medical or alternative therapies for relief. A recent study from Harvard University by Dr. Eisenberg reported that one of the most common alternative practitioners sought out for the treatment of headaches was the chiropractor. This study confirms what most chiropractors and their patients have already known, that chiropractic is one of the most effective avenues of health for headache sufferers.

Many Kids Take Too Many Headache Pills

The June 10, 2004 Reuters Health reports that a new study released June 10, shows that nearly one quarter of children and teens with chronic headaches are overusing over-the-counter pain relievers. The study defined overuse of pain relievers as taking more than three doses per week for over six weeks.

The study noted that approximately one in seven kids said they took the medicines without telling their parents. Almost one in five participants said they had headaches every day, or nearly so. Most of the daily headache sufferers were girls and students who got high grades in school. Study author Dr. A. David Rothner, of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio told Reuters Health, “Most likely children and teens are taking this medicine because they think it will relieve their headaches, and not to get any type of “high.” The study noted that there are many reasons why kids shouldn’t overuse these medicines. Some pain relievers contain aspirin, which puts children under the age of 19 at risk of Reye’s syndrome, a potentially fatal disorder. Additionally, other risks of overuse of over-the-counter pain medicines include kidney failure, liver problems, and intestinal and stomach bleeding.

The study author, Dr. Rothner concluded with a warning for parents, “If you see they’re using the medicine more than twice a week, then bingo! You’ve got a problem on your hands, and you’ve got to do something about it.”

June 20.11-Health Improvement

Two Simple Ways to Improve Your Health*

Two of the best and yet simple ways to improve your overall health with supplements include*:

  • Increasing your intake of antioxidants …
  • Increasing your intake of omega-3 oils …

Antioxidants are your body’s way to neutralize free radicals, those harmful metabolic byproducts that damage cells and tissues throughout your body.

Scientific evidence has repeatedly demonstrated that antioxidants are a cornerstone in the promotion of heart health, immune system support, and memory support.* Antioxidants also appear to play a role in helping to slow your signs of aging.*

Although many foods contain antioxidants, today’s poor-quality diets are nearly always insufficient in the full range of these beneficial free radical scavengers.* That’s why I strongly recommend increasing your antioxidant intake as a valuable way to optimize your health.*

The Two Vital Fats That Are KEY to Your Health

I’m sure you’ve heard by now about two fats in omega-3 oils that are crucial to your health — DHA and EPA*. These compounds are not only essential to maintaining your health — scientific research indicates that they may also promote heart health and provide immune system and mood support.*

Now in a perfect world, you would be able to get all the omega-3s you need by eating fish. Unfortunately, studies show that eating fish can potentially expose you to a high degree of contamination with industrial pollutants and toxins like mercury, PCBs, heavy metals and radioactive poisons.

In fact, the FDA and EPA have put out health advisories warning against certain fish and shellfish consumption for young children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and nursing mothers.

I formerly recommended that you take fish oil to enhance your intake of omega-3 fats. And high-quality fish oils are certainly great products, with many important health benefits.

But there are drawbacks.

Such as… fish oil is weak in antioxidant content. As you increase your intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids by consuming fish oil, you may actually increase your need for even more antioxidant protection if the fish oil has been exposed to excessive amounts of oxygen or has become rancid.

Why? Well, fish oil is perishable. Antioxidants help to ensure that the fish oil doesn’t oxidize easily. As we just noted, oxidation leads to the formation of those unhealthy free radicals.

This was a vexing problem for a long time…

Until the discovery of krill oil — a marine oil that helps solve the dilemma by uniquely and synergistically combining antioxidants and omega-3s.

It proved itself far superior to previously-recommended fish oils. Here’s how…

Powerful Antioxidants + Essential Omega-3 Oils = Startling Health*

When I first learned about this pure marine oil, I was extremely impressed with its many benefits and the solid research behind its unique combination of antioxidants, omega-3 oils and other ingredients*.

The list of how krill oil supports you will likely impress you too:

Many Ways Fish Oil Supports You*

  • A healthy heart*
  • Support for concentration, memory and learning*
  • Blood sugar health*
  • Healthy joints, with an increase in joint comfort*
  • Fighting your signs of aging*
  • Healthy brain and nervous system function and development*
  • Protection for cell membranes*
  • Cholesterol and other blood lipid health*
  • Healthy liver function*
  • Bolstering your immune system*
  • Healthy mood support*
  • Optimal skin health*

So, if you’re looking for a way to enhance your health with a product that really delivers the goods, then please take a minute to ask about adding Fish oil to your diet !!

June 16.11-Migraine Gene

Scientists Identify Genes Linked to Migraines

Inheriting any one of 3 gene variants raises risk for severe headaches by up to 15%, researchers say

– Mary Elizabeth Dallas

SUNDAY, June 12 (HealthDay News) — Researchers have identified three genes linked to migraine headache and found that people who inherit any one of these genes have a 10 to 15 percent greater risk for the condition.

Migraine headache — an abnormality in the response of nerve cells to stimuli — is characterized by recurring severe headaches, which often result in nausea as well as sensitivity to light and sound.

In examining genetic data from more than 23,000 women, including over 5,000 migraine sufferers, the researchers found an association between the headaches and variations in three genes: TRPM8 (which plays a role in sensitivity to cold and pain), LRP1 (a gene involved in the transmission of signals between neurons) and PRDM16.

“While migraine remains incompletely understood and its underlying causes difficult to pin down, identifying these three genetic variants helps shed light on the biological roots for this common and debilitating condition,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Daniel Chasman, assistant professor in the preventive medicine division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said in a hospital news release.

One migraine expert called the findings “very exciting.”

“The thinking for a long time was that migraine is most commonly a multi-genetic condition with potentially many genetic variations that contribute,” noted Dr. Audrey Halpern, clinical assistant professor in the department of neurology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “We clearly understand now that migraine is a condition characterized by disordered sensory processing.”

Although the study authors said the findings are encouraging, they noted that more research is needed to better understand exactly how each of these three genes is associated with migraine.

Halpern agreed that much more study lies ahead to unravel the genetics of migraine.

“This current research will help us more fully understand what happens during migraine, but there is also much more to learn,” she said. “We’ve always known it’s a genetic condition — but the last 10 years we’ve learned it’s a neurological condition. This study brings those two ideas together.”

The report is published in the June 12 online edition of the journal Nature Genetics.

June 13.11-Chiropractic Adjustment

Exactly how powerful is the experience of receiving a chiropractic adjustment?

New evidence suggests that chiropractic care does much more than alleviate back pain-it positively affects body chemistry all the way down to the cellular level. In a nutshell, chiropractic adjustments strengthen the body, making cells and DNA more resistant to disease.

In March 2006, the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a landmark study that offered a long-awaited scientific explanation for why chiropractic patients experience positive health benefits. The article stated that chiropractic care could stimulate basic physiological processes that help diminish bodily stress and enhance DNA repair.

In the study, a diverse group of 76 people were divided into three categories. Group one received short-term chiropractic care. Group two received long-term chiropractic care. Group three was the control group that did not receive chiropractic adjustments. Results indicated that long-term chiropractic care of two or more years produced healthier bodies. Age, sex, nutritional supplements and prior health conditions did not hinder or enhance these results. Basically stated, chiropractic adjustment improved the overall health of everyone in groups one and two.

To look at the study results on a deeper, more scientific level, let’s examine the average human body. Everything from your career, to your family dynamic, to your eating and sleeping habits produces physical, chemical and emotional stress in your body. These stresses can obstruct and negatively affect your nervous system, which in turn hinders your body’s ability to produce naturally occurring antioxidants that fight off disease and other illness.

However, chiropractic adjustment works to remove obstructions to the nervous system. This allows internal body processes to begin functioning at normal levels, thus enhancing the body’s ability to produce healthy chemicals that work to protect cells and DNA from becoming mutated by disease.

6.1.11-Two new studies warn — medical doctors may be hazardous to your health

Two new studies warn — medical doctors may be hazardous to your health

by S. L. Baker, features writer

(NaturalNews) Today’s doctors-in-training are learning how to think critically and clearly about the need for — and potential dangers of — any drugs they prescribe. And surgeons only operate if they are physically and mentally able to make sure they will not be putting their patient in any danger, right? Unfortunately, two new papers show that those assumptions are wrong. In fact, they reveal critical reasons why mainstream medicine can be a danger to your health and even threaten your life.
Bottom line: med students are being taught through a hidden curriculum devised and carried out by Big Pharma (and allowed by medical schools) to push the prescribing of their drugs. Meanwhile, countless surgeons are operating and sometimes harming patients because they are impaired by fatigue and lack of sleep.
Here are the facts. Medical students in the United States are being bombarded with the pro-drug propaganda of pharmaceutical
companies — and the students are exposed to this throughout their education, even in the years before they have clinical experience treating patients. According to research led by Kirsten Austad and Aaron S. Kesselheim from Harvard Medical School just published in PLoS Medicine, it turns out the drug giants have created what the Harvard researchers have dubbed a highly influential hidden curriculum
that pushes doctors-in-training into accepting and promoting Big Pharma’s
prescription drugs and other therapies.
The enormous and ongoing contact with
drug companies is associated with medical professionals developing positive attitudes about the marketing of prescription medications. Moreover, the med students are not developing any healthy skepticism about potential negative implications of the drug pushing techniques — or the drugs themselves.

The Harvard research team studied all published studies on this topic and collected the results from a total of 9,850 medical students studying at 76 different medical schools. The results showed that most medical students were interacting with the pharmaceutical industry and that contact increased in the clinical years.

In fact, up to 90 percent of all students working with patients in clinics were receiving some form of educational materials from none other than Big Pharma. And most of the medical students thought it was fine and dandy to accept gifts from drug manufacturers. They justified taking these freebies by claiming they were entitled to gifts from drug manufacturers because they had financial hardships; some med students said it must be ethical because most other students accepted gifts, too.

Almost two-thirds of students claimed that despite the fact they were receiving promotions, gifts and having other interactions with Big Pharma sales representatives, they were somehow miraculously immune from any bias from all this attention and all the “extras” from drug companies. Student opinions were split on whether physician-industry interactions should be regulated either by medical schools or the government.

The authors of the new study recommend better education for medical students on the subject of physician and drug industry relationships and they are also pushing for medical institutions to support reforms such as rules limiting the contact students have with Big Pharma marketing. However, in a statement to the media, the researchers noted it could be difficult to change the influence of the drug giants who seem to have a stronghold on medical schools and students.

“Given the potential for educational and institutional messages to be counteracted by the hidden curriculum, changes should be directed at faculty and residents who serve as role models for medical students,” the scientists concluded. “These changes can help move medical education a step closer to two important goals: the cultivation of strong professional values, as well as the promotion of a respect for scientific principles and critical review of evidence that will later inform clinical decision-making and prescribing practices.”

Another article just published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) shows that doctors — both residents still in training and experienced physicians — may be putting patients at risk due to sleep deprivation.

“The problem may only be getting worse,” CMAJ editors Drs. Noni MacDonald, Paul Hebert, Ken Flegel and Matthew Stanbrook wrote in an editorial. “Medical care today is more complex than in decades past….Increasing complexity of care at the bedside or in the operating theatre places unprecedented cognitive and physical demands on doctors who oversee and deliver care in these environments.”

They noted that a recent study indicated that lack of sleep is causing higher rates of surgical complications, especially if a surgeon had less than six hours of sleep the preceding night.
